TL;DR — Ruling

WHEREFORE, the petition is GRANTED. The Decision of the Court of Appeals dated 31 May 2000, as well as its Resolution dated 7 September 2000, are hereby SET ASIDE. The Decision of the Regional Trial Court of Quezon City, Branch 81 dated 12 April 1996 as amended by the Order dated 23 May 1996 is hereby REINSTATED with the modifications that the award for moral damages is increased to P50,000.00 to conform with prevailing jurisprudence and the award for exemplary damages is increased to P25,000.
